3 clips: Gilliam’s “Imaginarium”

I just found these three clips for this highly anticipated film at CommeAuCinema. How rich and mysterious this Imaginarium promises to be! No trailer has been released for this film, so enjoy these instead.

In the first, a boy and a girl are riding around a modern city in a horse and carriage, and he's trying to talk her into running away. But she's not yet "sweet sixteen... the age of consent."

In the second, Heath Ledger (I think) is presenting the Imaginarium at what looks like a large shopping mall. He's trying to help the ladies who've gathered around to understand that the Imaginarium is free of charge... "Can you put a price on your dreams?"

In the third. an old man is doing his best to warn the girl about some impending danger, mentioning someone "...none of us should ever hope to meet." The scene then moves to a high-altitude, craggy mountain precipice, where a horse and rider make their way in the snow towards a monstrous castle/fortress type deal.

Best of July ’09

Here are the five July releases which I have rated a 4 or 5:

PUBLIC ENEMIES | July 1
In this action-thriller, acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, and Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard in the incredible and true story of legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger (Depp), the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public. Johnny Depp, Michael Mann (dir), Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard
5-Star | Trailer | Official | RT | Add to Calendar | Tix

BRÜNO | July 10
Borat trickster Sasha Baron Cohen returns to the big screen to offer yet another stinging dose of sociopolitical satire in this comedy that finds him assuming the persona of gay fashionmonger Brüno, the self-proclaimed “voice of Austrian youth TV.” Originally conceived as part of Cohen’s cult television series Da Ali G Show, the character of Brüno offered a cleverly-costumed Cohen the opportunity to highlight the absurdities of the fashion industry by interviewing unsuspecting fashion icons and other haute couture hangers-on. Sasha Baron Cohen, Richard Bey, Ron Paul, Larry Charles (dir)
4-Star | Trailer | Official? | RT | Add to Calendar | Tix

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE | July 17
Harry obtains a Potions book which used to be belong to the very mysterious Half-Blood Prince. Harry finds that the Half-Blood Prince’s ancient scribbles are written along the margins of almost every page, giving Harry advice on how to improve greatly on his Potions work, and also teaching him a few helpful (and dangerous) spells along the way. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Jim Broadbent, David Yates (dir)
4-Star | Trailer | Official | RT | Add to Calendar | Tix | Tix IMAX

ORPHAN | July 24
At the local orphanage, recently bereaved John and Kate find themselves strangely drawn to a young girl named Esther. Almost as soon as they welcome Esther into their home, however, an alarming series of events begins to unfold, leading Kate to believe that there’s something wrong with Esther — this seemingly angelic little girl is not what she appears to be. Isabelle Fuhrman, Peter Sarsgaard, Vera Farmigam, Jaume Collet-Serra (dir)
4-Star | Trailer | Official | RT | Add to Calendar | Tix

FUNNY PEOPLE | July 31
When seasoned comedian George Simmons learns of his terminal, inoperable health condition, his desire to form a genuine friendship causes him to take a relatively green performer under his wing as his opening act. Adam Sandler, Seth Roger, Jason Schwartzman, Judd Apatow (dir)
4-Star | Trailer | Official | RT | Add to Calendar | Tix

“Das weiße Band”, Palme d’Or winner

As you know, Cannes’ Palme d’Or (their Best Film) just went to director Michael Haneke for “Das weiße Band” (“The White Ribbon”).

Desperate to see the trailer (of course), I scoured the web for anything I could find. My search led me to StoryTellerTrailer’s blog, where I found the following clips, in German with French subtitles. They convey what this film looks and feels like.

About the film:
A village in Protestant northern Germany.
1913-1914. On the eve of World War I.
The story of the children and teenagers of a choir run by the village schoolteacher, and their families: the baron, the steward, the pastor, the doctor, the midwife, the tenant farmers.
Strange accidents occur and gradually take on the character of a punishment ritual.
Who is behind it all?
Here are the clips. Often these videos disappear from their original sites without warning, so I suggest you watch them as soon as you can:

The Boys: The Sherman Brothers

When I saw this movie preview yesterday, it made me so happy and filled with joy, I was almost on the verge of tears.

Little did I know that almost all of the wonderful Disney songs we’ve loved were written by the same talented two brothers, over a span of sixty years.

You simply must see this trailer to believe it. It will take you back to that candy-colored time of visits to the movies and Disneyland, with all its bright colors, lovable animated characters, and warm and simple good fun.

I believe it is for films like this that I have started CinExcite! Upcoming Films. Why do I say that? Because had I not been working on this project to get the website and the Facebook page up and running, I would never have stumbled upon this treasure. Just today I found out the movie already opened in New York City, and is playing at one of my favorite art houses. But if I hadn’t been diligently reviewing hundreds of movie trailers, there’s almost no reason to believe I would have learned about it. And I would never have had the chance to bring it to your attention.

This is what is going to make CinExcite! Upcoming Films so important. Not its ability to broadcast the big blockbusters with the most famous stars that everyone will hear of anyway. No, it will be for movies like this, and for those like The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, and The Forlorn, and Map of the Sounds of Tokyo.

So I am pleased to bring this film to your attention, and invite you to use my signature web profile below to see the trailer, read reviews, find a theatre, and purchase tickets. If you’d like to be notified of the nationwide release dates, please add this film to your Facebook Events.

THE BOYS: THE SHERMAN BROTHER'S STORY | May 22 (New York)
The Boys: The Sherman Brothers’ Story is a feature-length documentary about the Sherman brothers, the astoundingly prolific Academy Award-winning songwriting team whose successful professional collaboration in family entertainment masked the brothers’ escalating personal differences throughout their six-decade partnership. Songs include Winnie The Pooh, Chim Chim Cher-ee, and It’s a Small World. Robert Sherman, Richard Sherman, Walt Disney, Gregory V. Sherman (dir)

Help / FAQ

The best way to receive help is to post a comment on the page in question. I monitor the site closely, and will reply below your comment.

FAQ (under development)

WHAT EXACTLY IS THE POINT OF CINEXCITE?
This question is best answered on our Start page.

WHAT DO YOUR RATINGS MEAN? WHY DID YOU RATE A FILM THAT WAY YOU DID?
My ratings guide is located here.

FILM LIST (THE ONLINE SPREADSHEET)
How do I sort, search, and filter the list? How do I access all the pages? How do I switch from the sortable spreadsheet to the searchable spreadsheet?

Why isn’t a specific film on your list?
  1. Either I just haven’t heard about it yet (in which case you should bring it to my attention); or
  2. I have added it to the Reject list, and you are not searching the entire database. To do so, conduct your search while in spreadsheet view, or click on the page tab ‘Rejects’ and look for the title there.

SUBSCRIBING
How do I subscribe? What is an RSS feed? Why should I use it?

How do I subscribe only to specific types of posts?

ARE YOU SPONSORED OR CONNECTED IN ANY WAY TO THE INDUSTRY?
No, not at this time. However, I would like to build relationships with the major studios’ promotional departments, for the purpose of hearing about future projects as soon as they are announce, and possibly for sponsoring events like free ticket give-aways on sneak previews.

Another goal of mine is to become associated with a guild of online film critics.

Introducing retro trailers

Today my friend Blake suggested I devote a page here for retro trailers. I jumped. What a great idea! Old movie trailers offer a unique window into how films were marketed long ago, and it’s fun to imagine those audiences getting as psyched to see the hottest movie as we do.

So without further ado, here are some gems I think you’ll enjoy. I'll keep posting more under the label ‘retro’ as I find them, so you can subscribe to future posts. And please post a comment to offer suggestions for more (original theatrical trailers only).

Psycho, now with 100% more toilet.

Lolita: If this doesn’t scream retro, nothing does.

Gone with the Wind, complete with the treacly music

Dr. Strangelove: Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

The Birds

The Party, yes, now 100% more birdie num-nums.

Grand Hotel

To Kill a Mockingbird

Village of the Damned

Rosemary’s Baby

The Exorcist: “Nobody expected it...”

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Citizen Kane, simply fabulous

Zelig

Take the Money and Run

Blue Velvet, “From the mind of David Lynch...”

Pulp Fiction: This one is funny because, following on its winning Cannes’ Palme d’Or, it starts out to make you believe it is an art house film.

All About Eve

2001: A Space Odyssey: High quality. Not absolutely sure it is the original theatrical trailer, but it sure looks like it.

Zardoz, suggested from my friend Jon.

List of CinExcite’s rated films

Every film trailer we watch and every film we're tracking is listed here. Each entry includes the title, opening date, my rating, and link to the trailer, if available.

View the list of films in Excel format:
The list is essentially an Excel-type spreadsheet. Each column may be sorted (to help find a film by title, date or rating), or filtered (to narrow the list only to films with ratings or release dates you are interested in).

The list has five sections, which you can find by clicking the tabs at the bottom of the page:
  • Upcoming Films: Includes every movie I've seen the trailer for, including those I plan to see (rated 4 or 5), and other films which might interest you (rated 1-3).
  • Announced; no trailer yet: This list is for notable films I am watching for, but for which no trailer has been released. Most of these films do not yet have a release date.
  • Past Films: Once a film's release is a month past, I archive their entries here. This helps keep the Upcoming Films list up to date.
  • Rejected Films: This is for titles whose trailer I have reviewed, but find no compelling reason to see or bring to my readers' attention. No information other than the title is supplied. Usually my reason for rejecting a film is that, based on my limited time to see every film I want, and the content of the trailer, I'm simply not interested. Of course, no rating at CinExcite is cut in stone, and because I monitor the critical reception of new releases and the opinions of readers, I often change my mind once additional information is available.
  • Reader Suggestions: This list updates live each time a reader submits a film to us via our suggestion page.
If you need help using this list, I urge you to post a comment below, or contact me. Hearing your questions will help me continually improve this feature.

Guide to CinExcite Ratings

CinExcite ratings are based purely on my own taste in films, and are subject to change at any time, especially as reviews become available just prior to a film’s release. If you disagree with me about a rating, I welcome a discussion with you.

I come up with my ratings very quickly, based heavily on instinct and first impressions. I evaluate the trailer, the marketing pitch, and the poster, and ask myself two questions: “Will I see this film?” and, if not, “Is it still worth bringing to people’s attention?”

5 stars: Must-see; will feature on my monthly Best Of lists. Negative reviews are not likely to affect my plans to see these films.
4 stars: Will see; but not compelled to hype them before opening. Will more carefully monitor for negative reviews as release date approaches.

Films I will share with others
3 stars: Strong
2 stars: Moderate
1 star: Weak

Reject: Reviewed, but found no reason to list the film or share it with others.

All films reviewed will be added to the master list of films.

On-line resources

I know you'll find these resources as useful as I do. If you have a resource you'd like to share, send me a link and I'll consider it for this listing.

WHAT IS CINEXCITE?
I watch hundreds of movie trailers to find the most promising upcoming films. Since I can only see so many films, I rank the trailers I have seen, then keep a running calendar of upcoming movies I don’t want to miss.

Now, I’m sharing my lists with you, including links to online trailers, so you cab browse these movies and compile a calendar of your own.

About our links and on-line resources

CALENDAR & FORUM

Facebook CinExcite page
Join us at Facebook to participate in our on-line forum, and to use our calendar feature, which allows you to customize your own calendar of movie openings you don't want to miss.

TRAILERS
Apple
Apple Trailers is a suberb source for high-quality trailers. I recommend you watch them in the 720p format; it takes a while to download, but is worth it. If not, the Large format is just fine. Or, visit the iTunes site below to download trailers you want to see again and again.

Apple makes it easy to find the most recently posted trailers with a "Just Added" button that sorts all trailers by date published. A handy feature for those of us who don't want to miss anything new (or bother watching something twice).

Yahoo! Movies
Another good source of trailers. Yahoo! also allows you to compile lists of movies you want to see.

iTunes
As stated above, the advantage of iTunes is, you can download very large, high-quality, full-screen trailers which you can then watch again and again without waiting for the download each time.

New York Times
A great source of news, the Times has a comprehensive Movies section with its own subsection devoted to trailers. Times' movies section is also available as an RSS feed.

Hollywood.com
Another good site with its own section devoted to trailers.

This unique little site features not only the latest high-quality trailers, but exclusive clips and making-of featurettes.

When all else fails, YouTube frequently comes through.

OPENING DATE ANNOUNCEMENTS
Knowing about newly announced movie opening dates is vital when you track as many films as I do. It doesn't mean a thing to have the movie listed in your database if people can't find out about it when it's playing.

My preferred source, because you can keep browsing into the future a month at a time, indefinitely.

Many, many titles are found here that you are not likely to find anywhere else.

Never hurts to have one more place to check.

ONLINE TICKETING & SHOWTIMES

MovieTickets.com
My preferred source to buy movie tickets online. It also remembers my favorite theatres.

(And yes, if you don't usually buy your tickets before you leave the house, I highly recommend it. You're ensured the movie won't sell out, and you won't wait in line, which is worth the extra charge.)

Fandango.com
Another popular site, Fandango allows you to store a running list of movies you want to see. Highly useful.

IMDb
So many of you use IMDb each day, but did you know you can buy your tickets there? Now you do.
Ebert is the most insightful, trusted and informed film critic today. I check his page each Friday, and subscribe to his RSS feed.

Rotten Tomatoes
Anyone who wants to know what the critics are saying about the latest films should get to know this site. Its rating system will save you countless dollars lost to bad movies, and if you want only one site to visit to read countless reviews, this is the one.

INDIE, ART & FOREIGN CINEMA
TheAuteurs.com (Note: This site is in beta.)
A highly promising new venture that you should know about and promote amongst your cinephile friends. It has partnered with Scorcese's World Cinema Foundation (which restores old films) to present rare films online, both for a charge, and for free.

NEWS, TRADE, AND INSIDE SCOOPS
Variety
Movie news from a distinctly "trade" oriented point of view.

Ain't It Cool News by Harry Knowles
A fabulous geek site for lots of timely tidbits and trash about the latest movies. This site has its own personality, and isn't for everyone, but I promise that over time you will learn to appreciate it for the many scoops and valuable resources you will find here. Also available via RSS.
